Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young

Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who'd rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there's no reason we can't entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.

I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt.Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97:

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Tour de Fleece'10Team Phat Fiber,Team Lantern Rouge,Team Peolton

It's finally here again, the Tour de France, where all the best cyclists will be spinning their wheels from Saturday July 3 through Sunday July 25th. Ravelry spinners will be joining them and will be spinning along with them, only we'll be using spindles & spinning wheels for our challenge.

I'm going to be spinning for Team Phat Fiber and am also on Team Lantern Rouge and Team Peloton in the TdF group. I'll be using my spindle and have been practicing with some of the beautiful fibers from the contributors from the Phat Fiber Sample Box.

Having Strata around is giving me a handicap beside the physical one this year. She's been stealing my fiber every chance she gets and I think she must be up nights finding new places to store some of my best fiber since I can't find half of it. What I do have I've posted, and if I get to spin through this it will be a miracle!

StrataCATster Has Arrived!

We're all still missing Kitty so much but today turned out to be a miracle day for us. We went to the North Shore Animal League's Adoption Marathon and found a kitten that my husband wasn't allergic to...a miracle!

She's a cutie and the kids think she has the look of a Rock Star! Which brings us to the naming of the kitten. The first choice was Axl for Axl Rose of Guns 'N Roses, but it's not really a feminine name so that got the ax after a while.

Then we got to naming her after a guitar. I'm good with that, but Les Paul has the same problem Axl did, as does Martin, and then we got to Fender,ahhhh, I'm liking this, but of course the inevitable problem of calling her Fendi or Gucci came up so maybe not. But wait, let's visit Fender yet again and think of that great guitar, the Stratocaster, yes, that's something I can wrap my mind around. But Strato would be masculiine, so it would have to be Strata...StrataCATster...and there you have it. A great name. Little StrataCat.

If she ever decides to stay awake long enough to learn it, I wonder if she'll live up to it...so far I'd say she needs a little tuning, but she's just so cute I'll settle for her deciding she doesn't have to hide when she sees how big her new house is. I'm hoping that will happen very soon since it's like clowns in a VW bug when we all squeeze into the bathroom where she has her new pink Princess Bed & matching blanket, new toys, and stunning ceramic bowls from her Aunt Erika, and her litter box. I'm thrilled to announce that she finally decided it wasn't a bed and used it properly. There's hope for StrataCat yet :-)

Kitty looking for yarn & doing Cat Yoga 3/25/10

Kitty has been in the hospital being treated for kidney failure. This is her second day & while she's still on IV fluids & other medications, she was doing well enough today to read her Cat Yoga book, check out my bag to see if my knitting was still in there (I took it out, no sense in teasing her with good fibers that she can't play with), did some beautiful Cat Yoga poses and took a nap on my sweater after all that work.

I want to thank everyone who have been so supportive, offering love, help, healing thoughts, prayers, and information on Kitty's condition so I can be more informed and ask the right questions when I speak with the doctors. Thank you for hoping for a miracle, it means so much to all of us. We're praying for that miracle too.

Argentina-Yarn from Kyle - March 2010

I know I have a lot of catching up to do but this is a biggie. My son went to Buenos Aires and actually took the time to find the yarn district and bring home yarn by the kilo for me!!! Now that's a son every woman wishes she had, but I won the jackpot. He's the best!

The yarn is from two different shops, "nube" and "Yanabey". The book came from "nube" and has beautiful patterns. They're all written in Spanish so I'll need some help there, and they're written very differently than pattern books here. They appear to give measurements for the different sizes with an outline for the back, front & sleeves. Interesting. They must all be knitting geniuses in Argentina because I'm lost without a pattern.

The yarns from "nube" are fingering weight. He got 6 100g skeins of a dark gray, and 7 skeins of the dark cranberry/maroon colored yarn. Both are beautiful & I'm hunting for the right patterns. Socks for the boy are definitely on the ist!

The yarns from "Yanabey" are very different. They're similar in feel and appearance to Manos del Uruguay's Classica without the very thin areas you find in Manos. Both colors are stunning. The deep dark chocolate yarn has lighter shades & shades that seem almost black. The close-up photo with the tag is a pretty accurate photo of the color as is the close-up of the deep turquoise/blues. The blues are stunning and makes me think of watching the ocean moving.

So now I have to find the perfect patterns for the perfect yarns from the perfect son. I'm one happy lady :-)

Ravelympics 2010 Aerial Unwind Event


Hot off the presses...I am standing on the podium receiving a bouquet from none other than Kermit the Frog himself as the Ravelry International Anthem plays...Duuum, dummm, de-dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, du-de-dum dum de-dum dumdedumdeDUM!!!!

and the hip hop crowd goes wild with delight!!!

Also, please accept this medal from the head of the International Ravelympic Committee, Adonis Dionysius Bobicus Maximus. I've now got my first medal of the Games. Yay Bobicus Maximus!

Ravelympics 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics





I haven't been too busy lately as you can see. I'm in three groups and am doing everything from frogging an old sweater (happily finished), to knitting socks, a scarf, a few small person sweaters and hopefully I'll pull into the finish line with a Wollmeise Haruni shawl...I hope.
